The project manager wants me to demo my system at the mothership in Helsinki during an internal conference. My manager wants me to schnmooze more as a reasearcher. I know I have to schmooze more. I know I need more visibility. This conference would be a good opportunity. I really don't want to go.
It's the 14 & 15th of September. The way the flights work is that if I want to be there on the morning of the 14th, I need to leave the 12th so I can actually sleep the night of the 13th, sinc all flights from Boston to Helsinki a) are overnight flights b) connect somewhere in Europe, according to Expedia. This means flying on the 13th is right out because I would have to schmooze and attend right after having stepped off a 12 hour trip including layover somewhere, and I would miss half a day of the conference anyway. (No, Nokia will not be springing for a business class bed seat.)
Flights back all leave Helsinki in the morning or early afternoon, so I would have to fly back the 16th if I am to be there all day the second day when browing technologies and SOAP work is discussed, which is what I do. So I'd be leaving Sunday and coming back Thursday evening for a two day conference. No, I don't want to make it a full week in Helsinki. People who want to have fun in Helsinki take the boat to Stockholm.
This would be ok, but I have a wedding in Amsterdam two weekends after that, and the weekend in between Helsinki and Amsterdam I was planning to go to San Francisco. Since I travel exceedingly bad and they are all 6+ hour plane trips, I think I may have to cancel the trip I have not committed to, and not go to SF.
