Glamour Shot of Sonu UX ultra-portlable
Love

About time we got a new entry in the U line. Hopefully this will also make OQO try harder. And yes, I have seen the US product page on SonyStyle, but it hardly has any info yet.

Looks loverly, but having had terrible experiences with every single Sony computer product I've encountered, the name alone is enough to veto any impulse to buy it.

Their computers, actually, have been worse than "terrible". They've been stupid.

The PictureBooks did ok with me.

What OS is it running on? Is it Windows something, or something else like Palm? I have an old Sony Clie UX50. It was a good device, but its been put away now that I'm using my Cingular 8150.

XP Pro.

Ooooooooh. Now see, that is exactly what I've been thinking I need for my next big international trip. (But I have friends at OQO and similar reservations about Sony's quality control on their more esoteric gear...)

Discount-powered friends?

Unknown. But it never hurts to ask. (Unless they kick you in the crotch for asking. Then it hurts a lot.)

If they're really your friends, I'd bet they're unlikely to kick you in the crotch just for asking about their discount powers.¹
__________
¹   Depending on your kinks and your friends, they might be willing to kick you in the crotch for asking to be kicked in the crotch, but that's — pardon the expression — an edge case.

Then again, the Sony is cheaper, and seems to have Bluetooth 2.0 implementation on board for stereo BT headsets.

How does this compare with the Nokia 770 (which I think runs Linux)?

The 770 dioes not have hard disk, really, and all the issues that come with that. This does, and runs a standard XP install, so you can add whatever software you want.

And it has a keyboard -- well more of a thumbboard -- which is why I feel drawn to it. But the harddisk and the keyboard make it cost 5 times as much as a 770. The 770 is more of an appliance.

Oh, hm, a Japan-only product for now. Bother. Still, bluetooth and USB... could toss it into a bag with a HHK and go to town...

It's announced for a July release in the US, in a deal with the Cingular network for its EDGE connectivity.

I just browsed the TOS for Cingular's unlimited data plan, and I do not like them. No streaming allowed. No IM either, really. No VoIP. I do not know if they actually check, but still.
