Because when I think Super-studio Superstar to carry a movie  about a woman wronged in love with grace, resolve, and dignity so as to not make her a whiny wimp, I think Meg "Cutesy" Ryan. And when I think Super-studio Super-tramp Superstar to knock everyone's socks off, I think Eva Mendez (who?).

Poster for the 2008 remake of The Women

And what happened to Annette Benning's face?

Oh god, it's a romcom screwball! The best friends are cast inspired, though.

My current favorite quote from the TV ads is Candace Bergen talking to Meg Ryan in a restaurant as Meg arrives for lunch:

"I ordered you a gimlet. I know you don't drink in the afternoon, but you will eventually, so you might as well start now."

This movie looks like shit and makes me embarrassed to be a woman and a human being.

What do you feel about the original?

My ueber-gay gene says I have to see this, but my ueber-gay gene tells me it's going to suck the big one. Majorly.

Is this a remake of the real one? there seems to be a lot of that about, and I can't think why.

Yes, according to various sources it was a project in development for more than 13 years. And there was also a musical remake back in the 1950s, so this is the third time round.

I don't see anything in common with the original -- so far. If I believed he could, Cukor would be rolling in his grave now.

My brain says no but my heart say I gotta see Jada Pinkett Smith play one of ours.

I understand that. Her, Messing, and the cameos might be the only things worth here.

Writer/director Diane English says all the cattiness and backbiting of the original is de-emphasized in this one; instead it's all about "sisterhood" and supporting each other.

In other words, removing the whole purpose behind the original. Like rewriting Gone With The Wind to make Scarlett "more sympathetic" and not so bitchy. Great idea, huh?

removing the whole purpose behind the original.

No fucking shit. You gotta be kidding me, sisterhood? It doesn't just remove the keen observation to the lengths women clung to what defined them (men, any men), it kills half the plot! You are so right, it's exactly like Happy Scarlett.

This movie will not work outside of the time and place it was originally written in.
The 50s musical SUCKED and so will this new version.
Every gay guy I've talked to about this movie is disgusted, but a couple were interested in it purely for the car crash effect.
But for me the biggest problem is Jada Fucking Pinkett Smith.
The bitch CANNOT ACT. And just what I saw of her in the commercials was enough to scare me off.
Whatever. It won't make a dime.

I don't think it'll be a good remake. It might be an entertaining imitation.

On the plus side...

A remake usually means the original gets the 5-star DVD release treatment, and if that happens, who can say it was a bad thing no matter how awful the new movie is? (It's the only thing that keeps me sane when I see a trailer for the upcoming Day The Earth Stood Still staring Keanu Reeves and a CGI Gort, which should be subtitled: Stupidest greenlight ever given--why the fuck would you try to remake a movie that's perfect, you moron?.)

Annette Bening? She's been made to look like the cougar gal from Sex in the City. And now that I mention it, Meg Ryan's hair is just like Carrie's. The design of the ad is totally Sex in the City. OMG they've taken a gay icon and turned it into a derivative of a gay market-capturing device. Fail.

I've seen the trailer for this several times now. I have yet to laugh. I've cracked a smile at the "you'll drink eventually" line. And for a moment Debra Messing's birth scream is funny but then - how many "giving birth is slapstick funny" scenes does this world really need?

Ha! That old thing? :) I've actually been looking for something to replace it, since Lance's coming out is such old news now. :)

Well, yes, but even at the time my reaction was a mix of "Duh" and "So what?" :)
